Please note that we are currently processing credit card payments through cashapp. If you don't have cashapp we will send you an invite to grab the app along with an invoice. And face plate show 'R-12.' Tube chart has 6V6 scratched out. 1962 Ampeg Reverberocket R-12 R - Blue Check Tolex - USA.
A friend of mine has bought this at a carboot sale.I know, sickening. But he's prepared to trudge around these sales in the cold and wet, so reward is every now and then he comes across a little gem like this.Trouble was he switched it on and played it before getting advice as to how to proceed safely. Played the amp for a few minutes then POP!! The red cap you can see farthest left blew. He brought it to me this afternoon and I took the shots and pointed out why it had stopped working. Where is the best place to source the caps.does any one have any they can sell me?
As you can see the rest of the amp seems to be pretty original, apart from a pretty rudimentary mains lead adaptation. I date the amp from the speaker code 220311 seems to be week 11 of 1963. Please correct me if you know different. Any info you can offer will be much appreciated.as would a guess-timate of value.Cheers lads. Looks very clean (original tubes too?), I've no idea on value but should be great little amp when you get it running.
I'm no tech but have replaced a few caps over the years. Can you see the rating details on the caps and/or schematic? I'm not sure about a UK source but in the US I would try here:F&T is what I used recently in my Showman based on advice here. Keep us posted on progress, I'd like to hear some clips.
Hopefully no other damage was done when the cap went out.EDIT: Wow, they get $4500 for a reissue of it! I know $4.5k for a re-issue of something you can get an original of for $600-700. Seems a little unrealistic. The model No. Is R-12-Ra Reverberocket. All the tubes are original Ampeg branded Sylvania's 3 x 6SL7's, 1 x 6SN7 in the pre, 2 x 7591 power tubes and a 5Y3 rectifier. The Jensen speaker is original too.
There is a label inside the box with the tube compliment printed on it. 6V6 has been crossed out and 7591 hand written above, so I'm guessing this is one of the first 7591 models.Typical John.the Orange VT-1000 won't test any of those tubes, so I couldn't confirm their condition.
That's definitely vintage. I'm on a new computer and I don't have my archives set up (and even when I do, it won't be as good as what I had). I had a lot of Ampeg info.
The 7591's are a little hotter tube, but they aren't as plentiful as 6V6's. Somewhere I have a box of 6SL7's and 6SN7's.I can't give them away.Mickey-If I recall the 6SN7 was the PI tube on this amp. Does that sound right?Yeah Tony, that is going to require a major cap job. I would change all of the electrolytics.Surely Damien knows a good UK parts source.

Click to expand. Thanks for the info Marty.I'll send Damo a PM on FB with a link to this thread. Like you say I'm sure he'll know somewhere this side of the pond. What I have found out is that Ampeg originally built this amp in 1961/2 with a 6V6 power section, then changed it to 7591's during 1963. The code on the speaker is 220311. 220 is the manufacturer code for Jensen and 311 is year/week code. 311 is week 11 of either '53 or '63. We know the amp isn't from '53 so it has to be '63.I will advise my mate that he will need to get the caps done.
Sadly, sourcing stuff in the UK rarely ends up being at a one-stop shop.I noticed in the message you mentioned getting NOS stuff from the states. Hmmm, unless you have a good tech at hand who can treat it right, I wouldn't go down that route. One good possibility, is sourcing modern components that you can disguise in the body of the originals.
I've done it a couple of times. Pretty labour intensive though.Your mate is one lucky SOB.
I'd love to have that in my grubby mitts. Actually, I'd even love just to work on the darned thing.
